Panic Attack Treatment in Dubai

The fear is real. The danger isn’t.

A panic attack can arrive out of nowhere: in a meeting, on a flight, in the supermarket queue or in the middle of the night. Your heart pounds, your chest tightens, you can't catch your breath, and every part of you is convinced that something terrible is happening. Many people's first panic attack ends in an emergency room, sure they are having a heart attack.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone, and you are not "going crazy". Panic attacks are one of the most common and most treatable anxiety problems. With the right support, you can understand what your body is doing, stop fearing the next attack, and get back to the places and plans that panic has taken from you.

What is a Panic Attack?

A panic attack is a sudden surge of intense fear or discomfort that peaks within minutes. It is your body's alarm system, the fight-or-flight response, firing at full strength when there is no real danger.

One panic attack on its own is not a disorder. Many people have one or two in their lifetime, often during a stressful period. Panic disorder is when attacks keep happening unexpectedly and you start to live in fear of the next one: worrying about it, or changing what you do to avoid it.

Panic attacks can also appear alongside other types of anxiety, depression, trauma or periods of heavy stress and burnout.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Physical Signs

  • Racing or Pounding Heart: Palpitations that feel frightening and impossible to ignore.

  • Breathlessness: Feeling you can't get enough air, or a sense of choking.

  • Chest Tightness: Pressure or pain in the chest.

  • Dizziness: Feeling light-headed, unsteady or faint.

  • Trembling and Sweating: Shaking, sweating, hot flushes or chills.

  • Tingling or Numbness: Pins and needles, often in the hands, feet or face.

  • Nausea: An upset stomach or a sudden urge to find a bathroom.

Cognitive and Emotional Signs

  • Fear of Dying: A strong belief that you are having a heart attack, stroke or other medical emergency.

  • Fear of Losing Control: Worry that you'll faint, scream, "go crazy" or embarrass yourself.

  • Feeling Unreal: A sense that you, or the world around you, aren't quite real (depersonalization or derealization).

After the Attack

  • Fear of the Next One: Constantly scanning your body for warning signs.

  • Avoidance: Steering clear of flights, driving, crowded malls, the metro, exercise or anywhere a past attack happened.

  • Safety Habits: Always sitting near the exit, carrying water or medication "just in case", or never going out alone.

Where Panic Shows Up

Panic can happen anywhere, but some situations come up often for people living in Dubai:

  • Flying: For a city built around travel, a fear of panicking on a plane can quietly shrink your world, from work trips to visits home.

  • Driving: Busy highways, long bridges or being stuck in traffic with no easy way out.

  • Crowded Places: Malls, the metro, concerts or events where leaving quickly feels difficult.

  • Work Pressure: Presentations, high-stakes meetings or long periods of stress.

  • At Night: Waking suddenly from sleep in a state of panic.

The Panic Cycle

Panic keeps itself going through a loop that is easy to get caught in:

  1. You notice a body sensation, like a skipped heartbeat or a moment of dizziness.

  2. Your mind reads it as danger: "Something is wrong with my heart."

  3. That fear releases more adrenaline, which makes the sensations stronger.

  4. Stronger sensations seem to confirm the danger, and the panic peaks.

  5. Afterwards, you avoid whatever seemed to trigger it, so your brain never learns that you were safe.

Therapy works by breaking this cycle at each step.

Our Therapeutic Approach to Panic Attacks

Our goal is not to make sure you never feel anxious again. It is to help you stop fearing the sensations of panic, so they lose their power over you.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is widely recommended as a first-line psychological treatment for panic disorder. You'll learn how the panic cycle works, question the frightening interpretations that fuel it, and, step by step and at your own pace, return to the situations and sensations you've been avoiding. Each time you do, your brain learns that you are safe.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Mindfulness helps you observe body sensations with curiosity rather than alarm, so a fast heartbeat becomes something you notice rather than something you fight.

Nervous System Regulation

We'll practise grounding and breathing skills to help your body settle. These are tools to ride out a wave, not rituals you depend on to stay safe.

Medication

Some people benefit from medication alongside therapy. Psychotherapists do not prescribe medication, and Peninsula does not currently offer psychiatry, but we can refer you to recommended psychiatrists if it would help.

A Note on your Physical Health

Panic symptoms can closely resemble heart and breathing problems. If you've never had a panic attack before, or if you have chest pain or other new symptoms, please see a doctor first to rule out a medical cause. If you are ever unsure whether you're having a panic attack or a medical emergency, call 998.

When to Seek Urgent Help

Peninsula does not provide emergency services. If you are in a life-threatening situation or require immediate psychiatric care, please:

  • Call 998 for an ambulance.

  • Adults: Go to Rashid Hospital ER (Open 24/7).

  • Children/Teens: Go to Al Jalila Hospital (800 25 24).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a panic attack hurt me?

Panic attacks are extremely unpleasant, but in a healthy body they are not dangerous in themselves. The symptoms come from adrenaline, and they pass. Because they can look like a medical problem, though, it's important to get checked by a doctor if you have new or unexplained symptoms.

What should I do during a panic attack?

Remind yourself that this is panic and that it will pass; attacks usually peak within minutes. Slow your breathing, feel your feet on the ground, and if it's safe, stay where you are rather than escaping. Leaving teaches your brain that the situation was dangerous. Your therapist will help you build a plan that fits you.

How long does treatment take?

CBT for panic is usually structured and time-limited, and many people notice changes within the first weeks of practising new skills. After your first sessions, your therapist will give you a realistic sense of how long your treatment is likely to take.

Can I have sessions online?

Yes. We offer sessions in person at our clinic in JLT and online anywhere in the UAE, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm. Online sessions can be a good way to start if leaving home feels difficult right now.

How much does it cost, and can I use insurance?

Individual therapy is AED 850 for a 50-minute session. We work on a pay-and-claim basis, and many UAE insurance plans cover part or all of the cost. See our insurance guide for how it works.
